For Faculty/Staff

Applied Research

Basic research, the cornerstone of faculty/staff scholarly activity at comprehensive universities, must be complemented by applied research. Applied research provides opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to translate research outcomes into data and capabilities that service the community; facilitates collaboration, and creates new outreach models for partnership with industry and other stakeholders. UW-Whitewater, UW System, and WiSys provide grant funds to support applied research.

Protecting Your Intellectual Property

Awareness of intellectual property rights is an increasingly important issue for University faculty and staff—particularly as it relates to developing computer software, publishing and disseminating research, filing a patent, and creating instructional materials. Faculty/staff can access information and policies to effectively manage their intellectual property. By managing these rights, faculty and staff can maximize the dissemination, use, and impact of their work.

Commercializing Technology

Faculty/staff research output, skills, technologies, and methods are integral to economic development when made available to a wider range of users. UWW supports development of faculty research into new products, processes, applications, materials, or services. Resources are available for faculty/staff through the WiSys Technology Foundation, Inc., Whitewater University Technology Park, Whitewater Innovation Center, and Warhawk Business Incubation Program.

Starting a Business/Company

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater serves as a catalyst for economic development in the state of Wisconsin through its educational mission and by leveraging the talent and creativity of our faculty, staff, and students. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs helps faculty and staff connect to resources and services to start a business. The Office partners with other campus Centers to provide support from idea/conception to launch.

Developing a New Center or Institute

Universities commonly have a number of organizational areas outside traditional curricular structures. These areas are designated as centers or institutes. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater supports a variety of centers and institutes with varying purposes and characteristics. A list of all the formally recognized centers and institutes is available from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

Innovation Spotlight
